THE STORY BEHIND MY NEW ABSTRACT SERIES

So everything in my work happens organically….one idea always leads to another new idea, that’s just how it goes. And the same is true for the birth of my new framed abstract collection “My Marks.”

I’ve posted a lot of “in process” photos and short videos of me painting on my Instagram story over the years and I have been asked by several collectors or followers in that time asking if they can buy my scraps where I test colors and brush strokes. I never really considered it much as the dimensions are strange because I use scraps and I use the front and the back over the course of several paintings. But the requests to buy them mounted to the point I could no longer ignore. So I decided to start with a more regular size “scrap”…a 6x6 or 5x7 rectangle and then I just went about my normal painting process. I didn’t consider how the marks landed on the page, I just used the test strips as I typically would. At the end of each painting session I would not only review the larger painting but also how the test strip looked as well and when I felt happy with where it was I would move it aside and use a different scrap to continue my work.

Some pieces are chaotic and layered…you can tell the painting it was created with is larger and took a LONG time to work on. Others are limited in palette and subtle and that says something else about the painting it was created from.

I framed each of them in a floating frame so you can see the deckled edges the scraps have. The collection is currently sold out but if these resonate with you stay tuned…there may be more to come in 2023.

Cheers!

Catherine
