CATHERINE
Catherine is an American watercolor pop artist and illustrator living and working in Northern New Jersey. She attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York and graduated in 2000 with a degree in Communications Design, majoring in Illustration. Aside from being a fine artist Catherine is also a graphic designer and is the former owner of a small independent invitation design firm. She has been an art and design instructor for over 20 years and is a member of the American Watercolor Society. Her award winning work has been featured in several publications, many gallery shows and is part of various private collections across the United States and Europe.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My work is an intentional act of looking inward and backward. It draws from the people, places, and moments that shaped my youth as a Gen-X kid—snapshots of a life lived when the world felt open, colorful, and full of promise. These paintings are not about nostalgia as escape, but nostalgia as reflection: a way of honoring the joy, hope, and limitless possibility that once defined everyday experience. By revisiting these formative memories, I seek to relive—and reawaken—the emotional freedom of youth.
Through bold pop-art paintings, I translate personal history into a visual language that is both intimate and universal. Saturated color, playful imagery, and graphic forms echo the aesthetics of stickers, toys, cartoons, and cultural ephemera from a pre-digital era. These elements act as emotional touchstones, inviting viewers to recognize pieces of their own past while engaging with mine. What begins as autobiography becomes a shared experience of remembering.
My process balances intention with intuition. Each piece starts with a memory or feeling—sometimes tied to a specific time or place, other times to a fleeting sense of wonder—and unfolds through layered color, energetic composition, and deliberate boldness. The work mirrors the spirit of youth itself: vibrant, curious, and unapologetically expressive.
Ultimately, my paintings serve as visual reminders of a time when imagination came easily and the future felt wide open. In revisiting these moments, I offer viewers an invitation to reconnect with a version of themselves shaped by optimism, creativity, and hope. The joy of youth, I believe, never disappears—it simply waits to be remembered.
